What is about?
San Salvador in the 1920s
Text and art by Fabricio Valdivieso
San Salvador, located in the center of the republic of El Salvador, has been one of the most populous Central American cities since its founding as the capital of the nation in the 19th century. Throughout the last two centuries, both San Salvador and other main cities in the country have shown different urban environments. These scenes were captured in drawings, lithographs and photographs of yesteryear, preserved today in public and private collections, including newspapers of the time and important foreign publications. These ancient documents sometimes describe cultural aspects of the city and its social and economic dynamics, as if we could travel to that moment and enter among its people, and see first-hand that urban environment and its culture.
In this work, based on an anonymous photograph of the time, I have tried to expose and highlight one of the best known corners of this capital. It is the façade of the famous Paris Volcano warehouse, founded by the Bernheim family in the 1920s. The view offered by this popular building induces an extraordinary set of integrated architectures, including the Western Portal (Portal de Occidente) and the Portal Sagrera, both from the same period, located in front of Plaza Libertad in the current Historic Heart of this city.
Travelers of the 19th and early 20th centuries did not cease to be amazed at such a beautiful and busy metropolis, with theaters, active squares enlivened by classical orchestras, restaurants, hotels, casinos, and public and private institutions that showed off their ornamental architecture. The formal trade with its products coming from all over the world, the introduction of electricity and the latest generation cars for the 1920s, gave the perfect stamp of a country on the path of development hand in hand with the modern world. Making art based on the past of a constantly changing city is for this server, as an artist, an attempt to create a portal in time, and share an unusual journey towards what one day must have been in the eyes and feelings of our grandparents.
