This is a well known character depicted on the Copador pottery style created 1500 years ago in the Mayan region, used to decorated ceremonial vessels. No one know the real meaning of these figures, but it is very possible that it was associated with water. The South-eastern of Mesoamerica is a region with hundreds of rivers and lakes, bordering as well the Pacific coast. Being a good swimmer was part of the ancient life in this region.
