Located in El Salvador, also known as the Lake of Ilopango, is an ancient crater erupted on 535-536 AD during the existence of the classical Maya civilization. This event is considered one of the most horrific natural disasters in the world, being in fact the second-largest eruption in the last 200,000 years. The sky was filled with white ashes and dust which can still been scattered throughout the central region of El Salvador. Experts considered that such an eruption would explain the extreme global cooling of 535 AD, an 18-month period of cloudy skies, crop failures and famines described in both Roman and Chinese historical descriptions.
