After the Ilopango event in AD 535, which wiped out most of what is known today as El Salvador, one of the earliest settlements established in the devastated area was Ceren, a Maya village. Some called the "American Pompeii". The Mayans are well known for their remarkable advances in astronomy and the accuracy of their calendars, their mathematical calculations and the invention of zero, architecture, agriculture, art and writing among many other fields of knowledge. However, lessons coming from the classic Mayans go beyond their social, political, scientific and technological achievements. They also teach us about environmental consequences and landscape. Moreover, they teach us about their philosophy of life, social attitude and many more issues that could be practiced currently.
