Smoking is one of the oldest habits in America, perhaps has been existing at least since the 5th Century, during the Classic period in Mesoamerica.This habit can be found it on ancient Maya iconography showing images of priests or deities smoking rolled cigar. In other cases they also smoked pipes mixed with resin. There have been many interpretations about this habits. Some experts consider that tobacco were used as a ceremonial act, shaman cult, or friendship ritual in some cases. Archaeology have found many evidences of clay pipes in archaeological contexts in the Americas.
Because this amazing topic, we have create this art based on a section from the Madrid Codex, also known as the Tro-Cortesian Codex, a Maya book from the Posclassic period (900-1521 AD), which shows a well know image of a important personage smoking cigar resting in a ceremonial bench.
