On November 8th, 1519, HernánCortés and his army, mostly composed by theTlaxcalans and Otomis peoples, and about 600 hundred Spaniards soldiers, entered the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, in the Central plateau of Mexico.  This city was considered one of the largest cities in the world during that time. There, Cortés was peacefully received by Moctezuma II, who showered them with lavish gifts of gold and other presents. This fact triggered the pillage of the city and paved the way to the destruction of the great Aztec empire. Moctezuma was killed and Tenochtitlan was destroyed. The remains of this legendary city lie in what is now  modern Mexico City.
